Charles de Saint-Albin was the illegitimate son of France’s Regent and an opera dancer. His father never formally recognised him, yet by 1723 he held the archbishopric of Cambrai, the richest in France, immortalised by Hyacinthe Rigaud in silk, ermine and gold.
On the back, the face falls away. What remains is the gesture: a hand over the heart.
